Acid Grassland and Heath

This area which extends from the middle of the site to its northern edge consists of a mosaic of acid grassland, Bracken and occasional patches of Heather.

The acid grassland is dominated by Wavy-hair Grass, Sheep's Fescue and Creeping Soft-grass, together with other acid loving species including Mat Grass, Bent Grasses and Heath Bedstraw. Some of this area was grazed until relatively recently but following the cessation of this, the area is being colonised by young trees, mainly Silver Birch with some Oak. Bracken is also becoming very common and this is having the effect of stifling some tree regeneration.
