Wet Alder woodland

The northern tip of Herringthorpe Wood consists of a small but botanically rich area of wet Alder-dominated woodland, known as Alder carr. Other trees here include small numbers of Oak, Ash and Grey Poplar and Elder, Hawthorn and Hazel form an open shrub layer. The ground flora is typical of marshy places, consisting of carpets of Lesser Celandine and Wood Anemone, together with Meadowsweet, Nettle, Dog's Mercury, Great Willowherb, Hogweed, Water Mint, Creeping Buttercup and Garlic Mustard.

Where the ground rises on the edge of this area, Sycamore becomes dominant, along with Beech and Oak. The field layer is dominated by Creeping Soft-grass, with Bluebells and planted Daffodils also being present, the latter being abundant in the northern part of this area.
