Acid Grassland

The highest part of Hail Mary Hill Wood is not wooded but instead has open acid grassland dominated by Wavy-hair Grass, Sheep's Fescue and Common Bent. Small amounts of Heather, Heath Bedstraw and Field Woodrush are also present.

The boundary between the woodland and grassland is characterised by Bracken with young Oak, Birch and Bluebell and some of these grassland areas, in particular that on Hail Mary Hill Wood, are fast being lost to scrub invasion.

A large glade close to the eastern end of Treeton Wood has acid grassland dominated by Wavy-hair Grass. This and adjoining areas of Bracken are suffering from tree invasion which is leading to the development of scrub woodland.
