Raspberry Plantation

The eastern edge of Scholes Coppice on the far side of the stream from the rest of the wood is the remnants of a once more extensive area of woodland known as Raspberry Plantation which was destroyed by opencast mining. The mixture of native and non-native trees found here includes Sessile Oak, Sycamore, Ash, Wild Cherry, and dead and dying Wych Elm.

The ground flora here is richer than in much of the rest of the wood because light can penetrate into this area from the woodland edge. The ancient woodland indicator species, Bluebell, Yellow Archangel, Dog's Mercury and Wood Sorrel are typical, along with Lesser Celandine, Bramble, Creeping Soft-grass and Broadbuckler Fern.
