Bray Plantation

Almost all of Bray Plantation consists of a mixture of 60-90 year old Sycamore and mature Sessile Oak with younger trees of these two species beneath. Mature Sweet Chestnut, Beech, Ash, Wych Elm, Silver Birch, Goat Willow, Whitebeam, Wild Cherry, Rowan, Crab Apple, Holly, Hawthorn, Hazel, Dog Rose, Elder, Blackthorn and Hornbeam are also present in small numbers. Along the edge of Upper Wortley Road can be found small amounts of Gorse and Broom.

Although it is not an ancient woodland, Bray Plantation supports a comparatively wide range of plants. The shady centre of the wood has a ground flora dominated by Bramble, Creeping Soft-grass and Bracken. A greater variety of herb species can be found in more open areas, these including Hedge Woundwort, Nettle, Hogweed, Creeping Thistle, Goosegrass and Rosebay Willowherb. Woodland edges support an even greater range of species including Wood Melick, Dog's Mercury, Wood Avens, Enchanter's Nightshade and Ivy, which is particularly abundant here. Bluebell is frequent throughout Bray Plantation and other woodland herbs such as Herb Robert, Honeysuckle and grasses such as False Oat-grass and Wood Millet are also to be found.
