Oak-dominated woodland

The majority of Bowden Housteads Wood is characterised by maturing Sessile Oak, together with Beech, Sweet Chestnut and Sycamore. Other tree species include Silver Birch, Whitebeam, Wild Cherry and Wych Elm.

In general the shrub layer in these areas is poorly developed, except for occasional mature Holly, Hawthorn and young Hazel. The amount of tree regeneration varies considerably, depending upon the density of the canopy.

The ground flora is mainly dominated by grasses although where the canopy is more open, Bracken and Bramble are frequent. Bluebell, which is found throughout the site, can be abundant in places, along with Wood Anemone, Yellow Archangel and Lesser Celandine.
