Beech-dominated plantations
In some areas of Bowden Housteads Wood, Beech is almost the only
tree species. In such places, natural regeneration and a shrub
layer are generally absent and bare ground can be frequent.
Slightly richer
areas under Beech are associated with streams. In these areas,
Ash and Alder can be found, along with Hazel, Wych Elm and a good
mixture of herb species, including Lesser Celandine, Wood Anemone,
Creeping Buttercup, Enchanter's Nightshade and Yellow Pimpernel
and various species of grasses, rushes, sedges and ferns.
