Relict Coppice

Although occupying only 1% of the valley's woodland, this woodland type includes a particularly interesting area of Carr Wood which, as well as Oak standards, has an understorey of multi-stemmed Hazel, a few of which grows from coppice stools of over 1 metre in diameter. There are also a few multi-stemmed Oaks growing from coppice-like stools. This area of woodland is important as it shows what substantial areas of the valley's woodlands would have been like when they were managed by coppicing. Since the abandonment of coppice management in this area, Sycamore has been planted between the Oak standards.

A small area of young trees under power lines in Rollestone Wood has been coppiced more recently in order to prevent interference with overhead electricity cables.
