Planted Beech and/or Sweet Chestnut dominated woodland

This woodland type (which is mostly concentrated in Rollestone Wood) is dominated by closely spaced mature Beech of a uniform age, usually combined with some Sweet Chestnut. Prior to recent renovation work, many of the trees in these areas were diseased or dying.

Under the canopy there is virtually no ground vegetation, understorey or natural regeneration, except in areas where trees have fallen or been felled. In these places sapling Beeches dominate, together with some Oak, Sycamore and Birch.
