Mixed Woodland

This covers 38% of the valley's woodland area and is dominated by a mixture of non-native trees (Sycamore, Beech and Sweet Chestnut) and native species (Oak on drier ground and Ash, Alder and Crack Willow on wetter ground). Amounts of regeneration are often good and include locally native and non-native species. Stream banks and wet ground in these areas can have a mixed shrub layer with Hazel, Guelder Rose and Elm.

Under mixed woodland, the ground flora is dominated by Creeping Soft-grass, Bramble and Bluebell, with other ancient woodland indicator species such as Wood Sorrel also being present. Mixed woodland on damp soils supports a wider range of plant species including such ancient woodland indicator species as Wood Anemone and Yellow Archangel.
