Oak/Birch woodland

This is the major woodland type throughout the main areas of Wheata Wood and Prior Royd, as well as in parts of Birkin Royd.

Two species of both Oak (Pedunculate and Sessile) and Birch (Downy and Silver) are present, along with a range of hybrids. These trees are joined by scattered Rowan, Wych Elm and Holly, as well as by non-native species such as Sycamore, Sweet Chestnut, Horse Chestnut and Beech.

Areas of Oak/Birch woodland have a ground flora dominated by grasses with frequent Common Cow-wheat, a species thought to indicate ancient woodland, particularly that with a history of coppicing. Other areas have much Bramble and abundant Bluebell, which produces a good display in the spring.
