Sycamore dominated woodland

Though not native to Britain, Sycamore tends to be strongly associated with areas of ancient woodland ground flora species such as Wood Anemone, Wood Sorrel and Bluebell, presumably because both these and Sycamore prefer areas with deeper, richer, damper soils. In fact, the richest area of ground flora in Wheata Wood, which has Dog's Mercury, Ramsons, Wood Anemone, Wood Speedwell, Lesser Celandine and Greater Stitchwort, is under a mixed woodland of Sycamore, Oak and Sweet Chestnut.

Sycamore is also dominant in wet areas of Prior Royd where it partly displaces Alder. The ground flora here includes Guelder Rose, Yellow Pimpernel, Wood Anemone, Wood Sorrel, Yellow Archangel, Angelica, Valerian, Lady Fern and Green-ribbed Sedge.

Sycamore is also associated with an area of rich ground flora in Birkin Royd where Yellow Archangel, Dog's Mercury, Dog Violet, Sweet Woodruff, Greater Stitchwort, Bluebell and the grasses Wood Melick and Wood Millet are present.
