Heathland

Heather and Bilberry heaths along with areas of comparatively open acid grassland were much more extensive at the site until recently, but in recent years these have been invaded by Birch and young Oak. Small patches still remain however, for example in the open area between Wheata Wood and around the 'viewpoint' in Prior Royd. In Prior Royd, heathland vegetation can clearly be seen under developing tree cover.

These heathland areas are distinct from upland moorland in being dry and sandy, and without the formation of peat.
