HANG BANK WOOD - VISITING THE WOOD

LOCATION

Description
The Gleadless Valley lies approximately 3.5km (2 miles) south-east of Sheffield city centre.

Hang Bank Wood (grid reference SK365843) lies on the northern edge of the Blackstock Open Space. At its westernmost corner it adjoins Carr Wood, the northernmost part of the Heritage Woodland block of Carr, Ashes & Coneygree Woods.

To the south-east, on the other side of Blackstock Open Space, lies Lees Hall Wood, another of the Gleadless Valley's seven Heritage Woodlands.

VISITING BY CAR

Parking
The nearest parking to Hang Bank Wood can be found on Abney Road, close to the western end of the wood and at the end of Bankwood Close, adjacent to the eastern edge of the wood.

Parking can also be found on the access road to Blackstock 'Dump It' site, off Blackstock Road from where a path leads to Hang Bank Wood.

When parking, particular care should be taken not to inconvenience residents or to block bus routes.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Buses
The Gleadless Valley has excellent public transport links, with many buses serving the area.

Callow Road near to Hang Bank Wood is served by the 25A which runs every 20 minutes from Sheffield's High Street, and the inner-circle buses 8 and 9 which run once an hour.

Bus route 48 runs along Blackstock Road at 12 minute intervals. From here, paths lead to Hang Bank Wood.

Bus routes and times are of course subject to change and so you are advised to contact Traveline on 01709 515151 to confirm these details.

ACCESS TO THE WOOD

Access Points & Paths
A major footpath, between Abney Road and the Blackstock Road, runs along the southern edge of Hang Bank Wood.

Access into the eastern edge of Hang Bank Wood can be obtained from Bankwood Close.

Cat Lane, part of the Sheffield Round Walk gives access to the lower parts of both Hang Bank Wood and Carr Wood. It can be reached from Northcote Avenue and Carfield Lane in the Heeley/Meersbrook areas.

The northern limb of Hang Bank Wood, between Callow Road and Blackstock Road, has very limited access, being largely surrounded by a metal fence. Although a path crosses this northern limb, there is no access from this into the woodland.

Please refer to the access map below.

Wheelchair Access
Hang Bank Wood is on a relatively steeply sloping site and therefore generally unsuitable for access by wheelchair users. However the path along the southern edge of Hang Bank Wood between Abney Road and Blackstock Road 'Dump It' site is generally flat and well surfaced. There is though a relatively steeply sloping section close to Abney Road and, at the Blackstock Road end, the path can be narrow in places.

TOILET FACILITIES
There are no toilet facilities at or in the immediate vicinity of the site.
