BUCK WOOD - VISITING THE WOOD

LOCATION

Description
The Gleadless Valley lies approximately 3.5km (2 miles) south-east of Sheffield city centre.

Buck Wood (grid reference SK371843) is situated on a hillside overlooking Newfield Green Shopping Centre.

Adjoining the wood's eastern edge east is Hurlfield Open Space (grid reference SK372842), which consists of four relic fields divided by hedgerows, rough vegetation, scattered scrub and some small areas of species-rich grassland. On the far side of this is Hurlfield Quarry (grid reference SK373841), a small, disused sandstone quarry with areas of short species-rich grassland, which supports a good variety of meadow flowers. On the far side of Gleadless Road (at grid reference SK369841), the continuation of the stream running down the eastern edge of Buck Wood has wooded banks which support a variety of trees and shrubs and good areas of woodland flora.

VISITING BY CAR

Parking
There are car parks both in front of and behind Newfield Green Shopping Centre on Gleadless Road, close to the south-western corner of Buck Wood.

Parking is also available at the end of Daresbury Place, close to the north-western corner of the wood. Those parking here should give consideration to local residents.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Buses
The Gleadless Valley has excellent public transport links, with many buses serving the area.

Buck Wood can be reached using the number 47 bus which runs along Leighton Road at 12 minute intervals.

Bus routes and times are of course subject to change and so you are advised to contact Traveline on 01709 515151 to confirm these details.

ACCESS TO THE WOOD

Access Points & Paths
Buck Wood has a good network of paths, including some that are surfaced. More minor paths can suffer from erosion problems, making them muddy in the winter.

There are access points to Buck Wood from all surrounding areas, in particular from paths off Daresbury View and Daresbury Place to the north-west and from behind the Newfield Green Shopping Centre.

Please refer to the access map below.
