BUCK WOOD
- VISITING THE WOOD
LOCATION
Description
The Gleadless Valley lies approximately 3.5km (2 miles) south-east of
Sheffield city centre.
Buck Wood (grid reference
SK371843) is situated on a hillside overlooking Newfield Green Shopping
Centre.
Adjoining the wood's eastern edge east is Hurlfield Open Space (grid reference
SK372842), which consists of four relic fields divided by hedgerows, rough
vegetation, scattered scrub and some small areas of species-rich grassland.
On the far side of this is Hurlfield Quarry (grid reference SK373841),
a small, disused sandstone quarry with areas of short species-rich grassland,
which supports a good variety of meadow flowers. On the far side of Gleadless
Road (at grid reference SK369841), the continuation of the stream running
down the eastern edge of Buck Wood has wooded banks which support a variety
of trees and shrubs and good areas of woodland flora.
