ROLLESTONE WOOD - VISITING THE WOOD

LOCATION

Description
The Gleadless Valley lies approximately 3.5km (2 miles) south-east of Sheffield city centre.

Rollestone Wood (grid reference SK372835) lies within the triangle formed by Blackstock Road, Leighton Road and Raeburn Road.

Immediately to the south of Rollestone Wood lies the smaller woodland area of The Lumb.
At its opposite end, Rollestone Wood meets the northern end of Lees Hall Wood. Just north of this point lies Buck Wood Stream (grid reference SK369841), a stream with wooded banks which supports a variety of trees and shrubs and good areas of woodland flora.

Herdings Wood, another Heritage Woodland lies a short distance to the east of Rollestone Wood on the far side of Leighton Road.

Immediately adjacent to Rollestone Wood, lie two interesting areas of wildflower rich grassland, Rollestone Meadow (grid reference SK371838) and Herdings Meadows (grid reference SK374834). As well as grassland, both of these have areas of scrub vegetation.

VISITING BY CAR

Parking
Parking for Rollestone Wood can be found:

  • On Overend Road and Overend Close, at the western end of the wood
  • At various points off Leighton Road, close to the northern edge of the wood
  • On Raeburn Close, from where a track gives access to both Rollestone Wood and The Lumb

When parking, particular care should be taken not to inconvenience residents or to block bus routes.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Buses
The Gleadless Valley has excellent public transport links, with many buses serving the area.

Bus route 47 runs along Leighton Road to the north of Rollestone Wood and the 48 runs along Blackstock Road close to the western edge of the wood. Both of these services run every 12 minutes, terminating on Raeburn Road in Herdings, close to the southern end of Rollestone Wood and the Lumb.

Bus routes and times are of course subject to change and so you are advised to contact Traveline on 01709 515151 to confirm these details.

ACCESS TO THE WOOD

The woodlands and other open spaces in the Gleadless Valley are freely accessible and most parts have good path networks.

Access Points & Paths

The north-western end of Rollestone Wood can be reached from Blackstock Road, where this crosses the Meers Brook. From this, a
path runs along the northern edge of Rollestone Wood. A chain of paths runs along or close to the western edge of Rollestone Wood and, at various points along this, paths lead into the interior of the woodland.

The eastern edge of Rollestone Wood can easily be reached across Herdings Meadows from Leighton Road and Raeburn Road.

A surfaced track between Raeburn Road and Overend Way runs between The Lumb and Rollestone Wood, giving access to both areas of woodland.

Please refer to the access map below.

Wheelchair Access
As a result of their often steeply sloping character and the variable quality of their paths, the woodlands and other open spaces of the Gleadless Valley have only limited accessibility for people in wheelchairs.

Being mainly situated in narrow, sometimes steep-sided stream valleys, Rollestone Wood is generally inaccessible to wheelchair users. However, surfaced paths run along parts of the western edge of the wood.

TOILET FACILITIES
There are no toilet facilities at or in the immediate vicinity of the site.

CONTACT INFORMATION
