THE LUMB - VISITING THE WOOD

LOCATION

Description
The Gleadless Valley lies approximately 3.5km (2 miles) south-east of Sheffield city centre.

The Lumb (grid reference SK371830) is located immediately south of Rollestone Wood, from which it is separated by a surfaced track.

Herdings Meadows (grid reference SK374834), an area of open grassland with wildflower meadow and some scrub, wet flushes and small plantations, lies just to the north-east of the Lumb.

VISITING BY CAR

Parking
The most convenient parking for the Lumb and the southern end of Rollestone Wood is on Raeburn Close, off Raeburn Road. When parking, particular care should be taken not to inconvenience residents or to block bus routes.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Buses
The Gleadless Valley has excellent public transport links, with many buses serving the area.

Bus routes 47 and 48 both terminate on Raeburn Road in Herdings, close to the Lumb. Both of services run at 12 minute intervals throughout the day.

Bus routes and times are of course subject to change and so you are advised to contact Traveline on 01709 515151 to confirm these details.

ACCESS TO THE WOOD

Access Points & Paths
As a result of its location in a narrow steep sided stream valley, The Lumb has only limited access, the southern end being particularly inaccessible. The northern end can be explored using paths off a surfaced track running between Raeburn Road and Raeburn Close in the east and Overend Way, Constable Road, Ironside Road and Ironside Place in the west.

Surfaced paths run along both the eastern and western edges of The Lumb although there is no access from these into the interior of the wood.

Please refer to the access map below.

Wheelchair Access
The Lumb is steeply sloping site and therefore unsuitable for access by wheelchair users. However, surfaced paths running along both the eastern and western edges of the wood are accessible to people in wheelchairs.

TOILET FACILITIES
There are no toilet facilities at or in the immediate vicinity of the site.

CONTACT INFORMATION
Like all of the other Heritage Woodlands in the Gleadless Valley, The Lumb is owned and managed by Sheffield City Council.
