HERDINGS WOOD - VISITING THE WOOD

LOCATION

Description
The Gleadless Valley lies approximately 3.5km (2 miles) south-east of Sheffield city centre.

Herdings Wood (grid reference SK371843) is split into two blocks joined by a narrow wooded strip. It forms part of the network of woodlands and adjacent open meadows, which is such a characteristic feature of this part of Sheffield. To the south-west of the wood, between this and Rollestone Wood, lies Herdings Meadows (grid reference SK374834), an area of open grassland with wildflower meadow and some scrub, wet flushes and small plantations. Immediately adjacent to the northern edge of the wood is Nether Spring Open Space (grid reference SK377836), an interesting area consisting of a mixture of habitats, including small relic fields divided by hedgerows; wooded stream banks; rough grassland; and scrub.

VISITING BY CAR

Parking
Limited parking for the wood can be found at various points off Leighton Road and at the end of Spring Close Dell.

When parking, particular care should be taken not to inconvenience residents or to block bus routes.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Buses
The Gleadless Valley has excellent public transport links, with many buses serving the area.

Bus route 47 runs along Leighton Road at 12 minute intervals, passing close to the southern edge of the wood.

Bus routes and times are of course subject to change and so you are advised to contact Traveline on 01709 515151 to confirm these details.

ACCESS TO THE WOOD

Access Points & Paths
Herdings Wood and Herdings Meadows can easily be reached from Leighton Road from which a well-used tarmac path running between this and Fleury Close gives access to parts of the wood.

A path leading off Spring Close, and which crosses the fields of Nether Spring Open Space, provides some limited access into the northern edge of the wood.

A major path connecting Gleadless Road and Leighton Road passes along the eastern edge of the wood.

Please refer to the access map below.

Wheelchair Access
As a result of their often steeply sloping character and the variable quality of their paths, the woodlands and other open spaces of the Gleadless Valley have only limited accessibility for people in wheelchairs.

The path that runs between Leighton Road and Fleury Close through the western end of Herdings Wood is wide and well surfaced but it should be noted that there are some relatively steeply sloping sections. Other paths through the woodland are not, at present, suitable for use by wheelchair users.

TOILET FACILITIES
There are no toilet facilities at or in the immediate vicinity of the site.

CONTACT INFORMATION
Like all of the other Heritage Woodlands in the Gleadless Valley, Herdings Wood is owned and managed by Sheffield City Council.
