LEES HALL WOOD - VISITING THE WOOD

LOCATION

Description
The Gleadless Valley lies approximately 3.5km (2 miles) south-east of Sheffield city centre.

Leeshall Wood (grid reference SK366836) lies to the west of Blackstock Road and between this and Lees Hall Open Space (grid reference SK363837). The latter has significant areas of species-rich meadows and open grassland as well as scrub and scattered trees. The mix of habitats in this area, taken together with the adjacent woodlands, makes it of particularly high value for birds. Close to the south-eastern corner of Lees Hall Wood is Lees Hall Meadow (grid reference SK368833), a small, neglected meadow area with some scrub and with a relatively rich flora for its size.

A short distance to the north-west of Lees Hall Wood can be found the smaller Heritage Woodland of Hang Bank Wood. Another Heritage Woodland, Carr, Ashes & Coneygree Woods, lies about half a mile to the west. Immediately on the opposite side of Blackstock Road from Lees Hall Wood is Rollestone Wood, the largest of the seven Heritage Woodlands in the Gleadless Valley.

Buck Wood Stream (grid reference SK369841), a stream with wooded banks which supports a variety of trees and shrubs and good areas of woodland flora joins the Meers Brook close to the northern edge of Lees Hall Wood..

VISITING BY CAR

Parking
The access road for Blackstock 'Dump It' site crosses the northern end of Lees Hall Wood and parking can be found along this as long as care is taken not to block access to the 'Dump It' site.

Parking is also possible on Gaunt Road close to the south-eastern edge of the wood. When parking here, particular care should be taken not to inconvenience residents or to block bus routes.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Buses
The Gleadless Valley has excellent public transport links, with many buses serving the area.

Bus number 48 runs at 12 minute intervals along Blackstock Road, close to the wood's eastern edge.

Bus routes and times are of course subject to change and so you are advised to contact Traveline on 01709 515151 to confirm these details.

ACCESS TO THE WOOD

Access Points & Paths
Leeshall Wood has easy access, except where it is bounded on its south-western edge by Leeshall Golf Course. Although the woodland has an extensive network of footpaths it should be noted that some of these can become eroded and muddy, especially in winter and in wet weather.

A number of paths lead into Lees Hall Wood from the access road to Blackstock Road 'Dump-It' site. The wood is also accessible from Gaunt Road in the east. However this access point is unsurfaced and can be muddy in the winter.

From the west, Lees Hall Wood can be approached across Lees Hall Open Space along the route of the Sheffield Round Walk. Another path, which leads off Abney Road, passes along the southern edge of Hang Bank Wood before entering the northern end of Lees Hall Wood.

Please refer to the access map below.

Wheelchair Access
As a result of their often steeply sloping character and the variable quality of their paths, the woodlands and other open spaces of the Gleadless Valley have only limited accessibility for people in wheelchairs.

Limited access to the northern part of Lees Hall Wood can be gained along the access road to Blackstock 'Dump It' site. However, paths leading off this into the rest of the wood can become eroded and muddy, especially in winter and in wet weather, and are therefore unsuitable for wheelchairs.

TOILET FACILITIES
There are no toilet facilities at or in the immediate vicinity of the site.

CONTACT INFORMATION
Like all of the other Heritage Woodlands in the Gleadless Valley, Lees Hall Wood is owned and managed by Sheffield City Council.
