CARR, ASHES & CONEYGREE WOODS - VISITING
THE WOODS

LOCATION

Description
The Gleadless Valley lies approximately 3.5km (2 miles) south-east of Sheffield city centre.

Carr, Ashes & Coneygree Woods (grid reference SK360838) form the most westerly of the seven Heritage Woodlands in the valley. They lie immediately to the east of the Meersbrook area, on the western edge of Lees Hall Open Space.

At its northern end, Carr Wood joins with the Heritage Woodland of Hang Bank Wood, as well as with Cat Lane (grid reference SK362844), an old lane with adjacent disused allotments, young woodland, hedges, scrub, grassland and wet ground. Another Heritage Woodland, Lees Hall Wood, lies a short distance to the east being separated from Carr, Ashes & Coneygree Woods by Lees Hall Open Space (grid reference SK363837) an area of open grassland, species-rich meadows, scrub and scattered trees. The mix of habitats in this area, taken together with the adjacent woodlands, makes it of particularly high value for birds.

All bus routes and times are of course subject to change and so you are advised to contact Traveline on 01709 515151 to confirm these details.

ACCESS TO THE WOOD

Access Points & Paths
Ashes Wood is the Gleadless Valley woodland most accessible from the Meersbrook area, via roads off Lees Hall Road, including Thorpe House Avenue. Its southern end can be entered from the access drive to Newfield School.

Cat Lane, part of the Sheffield Round Walk gives access to the northern end of Carr Wood. It can be reached from Northcote Avenue and Carfield Lane in the Heeley/Meersbrook areas.

Another footpath leaves Abney Road and passes along the southern edge of Hang Bank Wood between this and Carr Wood and Blackstock Open Space.

Access can also be gained from the south and west, by following the access road to Blackstock Road 'Dump It' site and then continuing along this, across Lees Hall Open Space to the eastern edge of Coneygree Wood.

Please refer to the access map below.

Wheelchair Access
As a result of their often steeply sloping character and the variable quality of their paths, the woodlands and other open spaces of the Gleadless Valley often have only limited accessibility for people in wheelchairs. Carr, Ashes & Coneygree Woods, being situated in narrow stream valleys, are particularly inaccessible.

TOILET FACILITIES
There are no toilet facilities at or in the immediate vicinity of the site.

CONTACT INFORMATION
Like all of the other Heritage Woodlands in the Gleadless Valley, Carr, Ashes & Coneygree Woods are owned and managed by Sheffield City Council.
