CANKLOW WOOD - VISITING THE WOOD

LOCATION

Description
Canklow Wood lies between the Canklow and Moorgate areas of Rotherham, less than one mile south of Rotherham town centre.

Grid reference: The centre of the wood is located at grid reference SK430907.

VISITING BY CAR

Parking
Parking for the wood is available next to
Boston Castle.

Parking is available next to Boston Castle, which can be reached along Boston Castle Grove,
next to Thomas Rotherham College.

Parking is also available on streets in the Canklow and Moorgate areas, although this is limited and consideration should be given to residents and other users of the area.

Parking on the busy West Bawtry Road at the southern end of the site is not advised.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Buses
A number of bus services from Rotherham Transport Interchange run along Moorgate, including the numbers 126, 129, and 263. During the day, these buses leave the Transport Interchange at approximately 5 minute intervals.

For access to the lower (western) part of the site, bus service number 132 runs every 20 minutes from the Rotherham Transport Interchange to the roundabout adjacent to Canklow Meadows Industrial Estate.

All bus routes and times are of course subject to change and so you are advised to contact Traveline on 01709 515151 to confirm these details.

ACCESS TO THE WOOD

Please refer to the access map below.

Access Points
The main access points to the wood are:

  • At the north-east corner of the site, through Boston Castle Park.
  • From Moorgate, along Lawton Lane, adjacent to Oakwood Comprehensive School.
  • Into the lower part of the site via Wood Lane, adjacent to Canklow Woods Primary School
  • From various points along West Bawtry Road

Paths
Canklow Wood is served by a network of footpaths, including a number of Public Rights of Way. Most of the paths are easily accessible, though in places they can be narrow or unclear or have an uneven surface.

The old quarry workings towards the top end of the site have a number of sheer faces and as a result, care should be taken near the top of these. A fenced off area towards the south-western edge of the site, is currently tenanted by a small-holder and access to this part of the site is therefore not open to the public.

Wheelchair Access
The sloping nature of the site and the current state of the paths, currently makes wheelchair access into much of the wood impractical.

TOILET FACILITIES

There are no toilet facilities at or in the immediate vicinity of the site.

CONTACT INFORMATION

Canklow Wood is owned and managed by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council.
