CANKLOW
WOOD - ANIMALS
INVERTEBRATES
Canklow Wood is important for its rich invertebrate fauna. Over
500 invertebrates have been recorded and these include a number
of nationally scarce species. Butterflies and moths found at the
site include Holly Blue, Purple Hairstreak and Dotted Border-wave.
BIRDS
The area supports a range of breeding and visiting bird species
associated with broadleaved woodland, woodland edges, scrub and
open grassland. Green and Greater-spotted Woodpeckers are associated
with woodland areas, whilst Yellowhammer,
Kestrel and Skylark can be found in more open areas.

MAMMALS
In total, 10 mammal species have been recorded from the site. These
include Brown Hare, Hedgehog, Common Shrew and Weasel. Brown Hare,
a declining species in Britain, benefits from the variety of habitats
on the site, using the open grassland areas for feeding and the
woodland areas for shelter.
More general information on the birds
and animals of the Heritage Woodlands is available elsewhere
on this website.
