BOWDEN HOUSTEADS WOOD - VISITING THE WOOD

LOCATION

Description
Bowden Housteads Wood lies 3 kilometres east of the centre of Sheffield, between the Handsworth and Darnall areas of the city.

The wood is cut into three parts by the Sheffield Parkway (A630) and the Mosborough Parkway (A57).

Grid reference
The Ordnance Survey grid references for the three parts of the site are:

Northern section: SK398869
South-eastern section: SK398864
South-western section: SK395863

The adjoining area of Spring Wood and Car Brook Ravine lies at grid reference SK405862.

Bowden Housteads Wood is divided in half by the Sheffield Parkway, which also gives excellent access to the site from the M1 motorway
and the centre of Sheffield

VISITING BY CAR

Parking
Parking is available in a number of places around the edges of the wood.

A parking area adjoining the northern section of the site can be reached
by turning left from the slip road leading onto the eastbound carriageway
of the Sheffield Parkway from the roundabout at the end of the Mosborough Parkway. On leaving this parking area, it is necessary to turn left down the slip road onto the eastbound carriageway of the Sheffield Parkway. Those wishing to return in the direction of Sheffield city centre should turn off at the junction for Handsworth shortly after the wood and go round the roundabout before returning onto the westbound Sheffield Parkway.

Although this area is large enough to be used by coaches, it should be noted that it suffers badly from fly-tipping and other undesirable uses. For this reason, visitors to the wood may prefer to park elsewhere.

Other parking is available within adjacent residential areas including on Richmond Park Rise and Richmond Park Grove which adjoin the south-eastern section of the wood and on Clifton Crescent and Clifton Lane in the east and Bowden Wood Crescent in the west, from all of which access can be gained to the northern section of the wood. Visitors should note that parking in these areas is limited and that consideration needs to be given to local residents.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Buses
The area is well served by local bus services, particularly the number 52 to Handsworth from Sheffield city centre. This service stops near to ASDA and elsewhere on Handsworth Road, which runs between Darnall and Handsworth, close to the eastern edge of the wood. During the day, the number 52 bus runs every 10 minutes.

All bus routes and times are of course subject to change and so you are advised to contact Traveline on 01709 515151 to confirm these details.

ACCESS TO THE WOOD

Please refer to the access map below.

Access Points
Access into the northern part of the wood can be obtained:

  • from the north along the Trans Pennine Trail
  • from the east from Clifton Lane
  • from the south off the Sheffield Parkway parking area
  • from the west across a field/recreation ground from Bowden Wood Crescent

The south-eastern section of the site can be reached:

  • from the south along the Trans Pennine Trail
  • from the east from a variety of access points off Richmond Park Rise and Richmond Park Grove

The south-western part of the site can be accessed:

  • from the west along the Sustrans National Cycle Route
  • from the south, via paths off Danewood Avenue

The three separate parts of the site are connected by footbridges, one over the Sheffield Parkway and two over the Mosborough Parkway.

Paths
Bowden Housteads Wood is well served by footpaths, the majority of which are surfaced and either flat or gently sloping.

Spring Wood and Car Brook Ravine have paths that are both steeply sloping and of a lower standard than those in Bowden Housteads Wood.

Wheelchair Access
The main paths through Bowden Housteads Wood have been surfaced, some in the recent past, and provide good access for people with a wide range of abilities, including those in wheelchairs. The Trans-Pennine Trail and the Sustrans National Cycle Route are particularly accessible.

As a result of their slope and condition, paths in Spring Wood and Car Brook Ravine are not currently accessible to wheelchair users.

TOILET FACILITIES

The nearest toilet facilities to the site are at ASDA on Handsworth Road. There are no other toilet facilities at or in the immediate vicinity of the site.
