BOWDEN HOUSTEADS WOOD - VEGETATION

Taken together with the adjoining area of Spring Wood, Bowden Housteads Wood forms the largest surviving block of ancient woodland in the south-eastern part of Sheffield. It has areas of diverse, semi-natural vegetation and is a good example of an ancient woodland that has been modified by plantation forestry.

Bowden Housteads Wood can be subdivided into areas with different species composition and other characteristics. The classification of the different woodland types relates to that in the general descriptions of woodland types elsewhere on this website.

The distribution of these different vegetation types can be seen on the vegetation map below. Click on the key or on different areas on the map to read descriptions of each vegetation type.
