CLIFFE WOOD
- VISITING THE WOOD
LOCATION
Description
Cliffe Wood is located between Old Mill and Cundy Cross, about 1.5 kilometres
east of the centre of Barnsley. It forms the northern part of Dearne Valley
Park Local Nature Reserve.
Grid reference:
SE362068
VISITING BY
CAR
The site
is fringed by a number of roads including Rotherham Road on its north
side and Pontefract Road to the south.
 |
|
The route
of the old Barnsley Canal gives easy access through the site, including
for those in wheelchairs.
|
Parking
The best parking
place for access to the wood is the main car park for Dearne Valley Park
off Pontefract Road. A path (accessible to people in wheelchairs) leads
north from here across the River Dearne and past the lakes of Dearne Valley
Park to the southern edge of the wood.
For access to the
northern part of the site, parking can also be found in various side streets
off Rotherham Road. For those parking here, consideration should be given
to local residents and care should be taken crossing Rotherham Road.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Buses
There are frequent buses along Pontefract Road including the number 116,
which runs every 5 or 10 minutes. A bus stop is situated close to the
car park entrance on Pontefract Road, opposite the 'Spices of India' restaurant.
The number 100
runs along Rotherham Road once every half-hour and there is a bus stop
adjacent to the top end of the site at Long Causeway.
All bus routes and
times are of course subject to change and so you are advised to contact
Traveline on 01709 515151 to confirm these details.
ACCESS TO THE WOOD
Please refer to the access map below.
Access Points
The main access to
the site is from the main Dearne Valley Park car park off Pontefract Road.
Other access points
are:
- At various points
along the northern (top) edge of the wood from Rotherham Road.
- From the area
of housing adjacent to the north-west edge of the site.
- At the far western
corner of the site, from the centre of Barnsley across a bridge over
the River Dearne.
- Into the southern
edge of the site across a causeway between two lakes in Dearne Valley
Park.
- Towards the eastern
end of the southern edge of the site from a path along the north bank
of the River Dearne.
- Two points at the
eastern end of the site, one of these being along the route of the old
Barnsley canal.
Paths
A network of paths
gives good access to the great majority of the site. Access in the southern,
flatter half of the site is generally straightforward but some paths towards
the northern edge of the site can be steep in places. The flat, wide,
grassy route of the old Barnsley canal provides easy access from west
to east through the centre of the site.
Wheelchair Access
The flatter southern
half of the site has good access for people in wheelchairs and suitable
paths are indicated on the access map above. Unfortunately the steeper
nature and narrower paths in the northern part of the site make this area
inaccessible to wheelchairs.
TOILET FACILITIES
There are no toilet
facilities at or in the immediate vicinity of the site.
